  1 It happened after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his place.
  
  2 David said, "I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me." So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.
  
  3 But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, "Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Haven't his servants come to you to search, to overthrow, and to spy out the land?"
  
  4 So Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.
  
  5 Then there went certain persons, and told David how the men were served. He sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. The king said, "Stay at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return."
  
  6 When the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent one thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Arammaacah, and out of Zobah.
  
  7 So they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maacah and his people, who came and encamped before Medeba. The children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.
  
  8 When David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the army of the mighty men.
  
  9 The children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the gate of the city: and the kings who had come were by themselves in the field.
  
  10 Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.
  
  11 The rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and they put themselves in array against the children of Ammon.
  
  12 He said, "If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you are to help me; but if the children of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will help you.
  
  13 Be courageous, and let us be strong for our people, and for the cities of our God. May Yahweh do that which seems good to him."
  
  14 So Joab and the people who were with him drew near before the Syrians to the battle; and they fled before him.
  
  15 When the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.
  
  16 When the Syrians saw that they were defeated by Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians who were beyond the River, with Shophach the captain of the army of Hadadezer at their head.
  
  17 It was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came on them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.
  
  18 The Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed of the Syrians the men of seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the army.
  
  19 When the servants of Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with David, and served him: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.

  1 It happened, at the time of the return of the year, at the time when kings go out, that Joab led forth the army, and wasted the country of the children of Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem. Joab struck Rabbah, and overthrew it.
  
  2 David took the crown of their king from off his head, and found it to weigh a talent of gold, and there were precious stones in it; and it was set on David's head: and he brought forth the spoil of the city, exceeding much.
  
  3 He brought forth the people who were therein, and cut them with saws, and with iron picks, and with axes. David did so to all the cities of the children of Ammon. David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
  
  4 It happened after this, that there arose war at Gezer with the Philistines: then Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Sippai, of the sons of the giant; and they were subdued.
  
  5 There was again war with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.
  
  6 There was again war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, whose fingers and toes were twenty-four, six on each hand, and six on each foot; and he also was born to the giant.
  
  7 When he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea David's brother killed him.
  
  8 These were born to the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

  Les guerres de David.
  - Le contenu de ce chapitre est identique à ce que nous pouvons lire en 2Sa 10:1-19.
  Le seul moyen pour les pécheurs d'être en sûreté, consiste à se soumettre au Seigneur, en faisant la paix avec Lui, et en cherchant à Le servir.
  Sachons aider les autres, pratiquons le bien ; soyons toutefois vigilants, lors de ce service: Dirigeons-nous premièrement vers le chemin du salut, reconnaissons notre incrédulité et notre péché !

  Les guerres de David.
  - Bien que l'Éternel ait puni sévèrement les enfants d'Israël, à cause de leurs péchés, Il ne les laissa pas tomber entre les mains de leurs ennemis. L'aide divine peut surmonter tous les obstacles que peuvent représenter le nombre et la force de ceux qui défient le peuple d'Israël.
  Tous ceux qui placent leur confiance en Christ, seront plus que vainqueurs, par Celui qui les aime.

  1 Et il arriva, après cela, que Nakhash, roi des fils d'Ammon, mourut ; et son fils régna à sa place.
  
  2 Et David dit : J'userai de bonté envers Hanun, fils de Nakhash, car son père a usé de bonté envers moi. Et David envoya des messagers pour le consoler au sujet de son père. Et les serviteurs de David arrivèrent dans le pays des fils d'Ammon, vers Hanun, pour le consoler.
  
  3 Et les chefs des fils d'Ammon dirent à Hanun : Est-ce, à tes yeux, pour honorer ton père que David t'a envoyé des consolateurs ? N'est-ce pas pour reconnaître et détruire et explorer le pays, que ses serviteurs sont venus vers toi ?
  
  4 Et Hanun prit les serviteurs de David, et les fit raser, et fit couper leurs vêtements par le milieu jusqu'au bas des reins, et les renvoya.
  
  5 Et on alla, et on informa David au sujet de ces hommes ; et il envoya à leur rencontre, car les hommes étaient très-confus. Et le roi dit : Habitez à Jéricho jusqu'à ce que votre barbe ait poussé, alors vous reviendrez.
  
  6 Et les fils d'Ammon virent qu'ils s'étaient mis en mauvaise odeur auprès de David ; et Hanun et les fils d'Ammon envoyèrent mille talents d'argent pour prendre à leur solde, de la Mésopotamie, et de la Syrie de Maaca, et de Tsoba, des chars et des cavaliers.
  
  7 Et ils prirent à leur solde trente-deux mille hommes de chars, et le roi de Maaca avec son peuple ; et ils vinrent et campèrent devant Médeba. Et les fils d'Ammon s'assemblèrent de leurs villes, et vinrent pour combattre.
  
  8 Et David l'apprit, et il envoya Joab et toute l'armée, les hommes forts.
  
  9 Et les fils d'Ammon sortirent, et se rangèrent en bataille à l'entrée de la ville ; et les rois qui étaient venus étaient à part dans la campagne.
  
  10 Et Joab vit que le front de la bataille était contre lui, devant et derrière ; et il choisit des hommes de toute l'élite d'Israël, et les rangea contre les Syriens ;
  
  11 et le reste du peuple, il le plaça sous la main d'Abishaï, son frère, et ils se rangèrent contre les fils d'Ammon.
  
  12 Et il dit : Si les Syriens sont plus forts que moi, tu me seras en aide ; et si les fils d'Ammon sont plus forts que toi, je t'aiderai.
  
  13 Sois fort, et fortifions-nous à cause de notre peuple et à cause des villes de notre Dieu ; et que l'Éternel fasse ce qui est bon à ses yeux.
  
  14 Et Joab s'approcha, et le peuple qui était avec lui, au-devant des Syriens, pour livrer bataille ; et ils s'enfuirent devant lui.
  
  15 Et quand les fils d'Ammon virent que les Syriens s'étaient enfuis, ils s'enfuirent, eux aussi, devant Abishaï, son frère, et rentrèrent dans la ville. Et Joab vint à Jérusalem.
  
  16 Et quand les Syriens virent qu'ils étaient battus devant Israël, ils envoyèrent des messagers, et firent sortir les Syriens qui étaient au delà du fleuve ; et Shophac, chef de l'armée d'Hadarézer, était à leur tête.
  
  17 Et cela fut rapporté à David, et il assembla tout Israël, et passa le Jourdain, et vint à eux, et se rangea en bataille contre eux. Et David se rangea en bataille contre les Syriens ; et ils se battirent avec lui.
  
  18 Et les Syriens s'enfuirent de devant Israël ; et David tua aux Syriens sept mille chars, et quarante mille hommes de pied, et il mit à mort Shophac, chef de l'armée.
  
  19 Et les serviteurs d'Hadarézer virent qu'ils étaient battus devant Israël, et ils firent la paix avec David, et le servirent. Et les Syriens ne voulurent plus aider aux fils d'Ammon.

  1 Et il arriva, au temps du retour de l'année, au temps où les rois entrent en campagne, que Joab conduisit le gros de l'armée, et dévasta le pays des fils d'Ammon ; et il vint et assiégea Rabba ; mais David resta à Jérusalem. Et Joab frappa Rabba et la détruisit.
  
  2 Et David prit la couronne de leur roi de dessus sa tête (or elle fut trouvée du poids d'un talent d'or, et il y avait dessus des pierres précieuses) ; et elle fut mise sur la tête de David ; et il emmena de la ville une grande quantité de butin.
  
  3 Et il fit sortir le peuple qui s'y trouvait, et les scia avec la scie, et avec des herbes de fer, et avec des scies : et David fit ainsi à toutes les villes des fils d'Ammon. Et David et tout le peuple s'en retournèrent à Jérusalem.
  
  4 Et il arriva, après cela, qu'il y eut un combat à Guézer avec les Philistins. Alors Sibbecaï, le Hushathite, frappa Sippaï qui était d'entre les enfants du géant ; et ils furent subjugués.
  
  5 Et il y eut encore un combat avec les Philistins : et Elkanan, fils de Jaïr, frappa Lakhmi, frère de Goliath, le Guitthien ; et le bois de sa lance était comme l'ensouple des tisserands.
  
  6 Et il y eut encore un combat, à Gath : et il y avait là un homme de haute stature qui avait six doigts et six orteils, en tout vingt-quatre ; et lui aussi était né au géant.
  
  7 Et il outragea Israël ; mais Jonathan, fils de Shimha, frère de David, le frappa.
  
  8 étaient nés au géant, à Gath, et tombèrent par la main de David et par la main de ses serviteurs.
