    • Jérémie 41

      1 Or le septième mois de l’année, Ismaël, fils de Netania et petit-fils d’Élichama, est venu à Mispa auprès de Guedalia. Ismaël était de la famille royale et il avait été l’un des fonctionnaires importants du roi. Dix hommes l’accompagnaient. Pendant qu’ils mangeaient chez Guedalia,
      2 tout à coup, Ismaël s’est levé avec ses dix hommes, et ils ont frappé Guedalia à coups d’épée. C’est ainsi qu’ils ont tué celui que le roi de Babylone avait nommé gouverneur de Juda.
      3 Ensuite, Ismaël a assassiné aussi tous les Judéens qui étaient à Mispa avec Guedalia, ainsi que les soldats babyloniens qui se trouvaient là.
      4 Deux jours après l’assassinat de Guedalia, personne n’était encore au courant de sa mort.
      5 Des hommes sont arrivés de Sichem, de Silo et de Samarie. Ils étaient 80. Ils avaient la barbe coupée, les vêtements déchirés et le corps couvert d’incisions. Ils portaient des offrandes de blé et d’encens pour aller les offrir au SEIGNEUR au temple de Jérusalem.
      6 Ismaël est sorti de Mispa et il est allé à leur rencontre en pleurant. Après les avoir rejoints, il leur a dit : « Venez chez Guedalia, fils d’Ahicam. »
      7 Ils sont donc entrés dans la ville. Aussitôt, Ismaël et ses hommes les ont assassinés et ont jeté leurs corps dans une citerne.
      8 Mais dix hommes parmi eux avaient dit à Ismaël : « Ne nous tue pas. Nous avons caché des provisions dans les champs : du blé, de l’orge, de l’huile et du miel. » Alors Ismaël avait renoncé à les tuer avec leurs camarades.
      9 La citerne où Ismaël a fait jeter tous les corps est celle que le roi Asa avait fait creuser quand il était en guerre contre Bacha, roi d’Israël. Elle était très grande. Ismaël l’a remplie des corps des hommes assassinés.
      10 Ensuite, il a fait prisonniers tous ceux qui étaient restés à Mispa, ainsi que les filles du roi. Il a donc pris tous ceux que Nebouzaradan, le chef des gardes, avait confiés à Guedalia. Puis Ismaël est parti avec les prisonniers pour aller chez les Ammonites.
      11 Yohanan, fils de Caréa, et les officiers des groupes armés qui étaient avec lui ont appris tous les crimes d’Ismaël, fils de Netania.
      12 Ils ont rassemblé alors tous leurs hommes pour aller l’attaquer. Ils l’ont rattrapé au grand étang de Gabaon.
      13 Quand les prisonniers d’Ismaël ont vu Yohanan et les officiers qui l’accompagnaient, ils étaient pleins de joie.
      14 Alors tous les gens qu’Ismaël avait emmenés de Mispa ont fait demi-tour et ils ont rejoint Yohanan.
      15 Mais Ismaël a fui avec huit hommes devant Yohanan et il est allé chez les Ammonites.
      16 Après cela, Yohanan et les officiers qui l’accompagnaient ont rassemblé tous ceux qui étaient restés en vie et qu’Ismaël avait emmenés de Mispa après l’assassinat de Guedalia. Il y avait les hommes, c’est-à-dire les soldats, ainsi que les femmes, les enfants, les eunuques, c’est-à-dire tous ceux que Yohanan et les officiers avaient ramenés de Gabaon.
      17 Ils sont partis et se sont arrêtés au campement de Kimeham, près de Bethléem. Ils voulaient ensuite aller en Égypte.
      18 En effet, ils avaient peur des Babyloniens depuis qu’Ismaël avait assassiné Guedalia, le gouverneur de Juda nommé par le roi de Babylone.

      1 Now it happened in the seventh month, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the seed royal and one of the chief officers of the king, and ten men with him, came to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah; and there they ate bread together in Mizpah.
      2 Then arose Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and the ten men who were with him, and struck Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan with the sword, and killed him, whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land.
      3 Ishmael also killed all the Jews who were with him, with Gedaliah, at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans who were found there, the men of war.
      4 It happened the second day after he had killed Gedaliah, and no man knew it,
      5 that there came men from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, even eighty men, having their beards shaved and their clothes torn, and having cut themselves, with meal offerings and frankincense in their hand, to bring them to the house of Yahweh.
      6 Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went forth from Mizpah to meet them, weeping all along as he went: and it happened, as he met them, he said to them, Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam.
      7 It was so, when they came into the midst of the city, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah killed them, and cast them into the midst of the pit, he, and the men who were with him.
      8 But ten men were found among those who said to Ishmael, Don't kill us; for we have stores hidden in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey. So he stopped, and didn't kill them among their brothers.
      9 Now the pit in which Ishmael cast all the dead bodies of the men whom he had killed, by the side of Gedaliah (the same was who which Asa the king had made for fear of Baasha king of Israel), Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with those who were killed.
      10 Then Ishmael carried away captive all the residue of the people who were in Mizpah, even the king's daughters, and all the people who remained in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam; Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them away captive, and departed to go over to the children of Ammon.
      11 But when Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces who were with him, heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done,
      12 then they took all the men, and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and found him by the great waters that are in Gibeon.
      13 Now it happened that, when all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces who were with him, then they were glad.
      14 So all the people who Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah turned about and came back, and went to Johanan the son of Kareah.
      15 But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men, and went to the children of Ammon.
      16 Then took Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces who were with him, all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, from Mizpah, after that he had killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the men of war, and the women, and the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought back from Gibeon:
      17 and they departed, and lived in Geruth Chimham, which is by Bethlehem, to go to enter into Egypt,
      18 because of the Chaldeans; for they were afraid of them, because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon made governor over the land.

      Ceux qui détestent les véritables adorateurs de Dieu, revêtent souvent un faux aspect de piété, afin de pouvoir les atteindre plus facilement, en vue de leur nuire.

      La mort atteint souvent les hommes au moment où ils s'attendent le moins à la rencontrer ; nous devrions continuellement chercher à savoir si nous sommes prêts spirituellement à nous présenter devant le grand Juge céleste.

      Parfois, les richesses sont néfastes à la vie d'un homme. Ceux qui pensent pouvoir soudoyer la mort, en s’écriant : « ne nous atteint pas, nous disposons de grands trésors ici-bas », se fourvoient de façon lamentable.

      La triste histoire relatée dans ce texte est un avertissement : à l’inverse de la présence du royaume céleste, il ne faut jamais se croire en sécurité ici-bas !

      11 Le succès du méchant est toujours éphémère ; personne ne peut espérer prospérer, en ayant le cœur endurci contre Dieu.

      Ceux qui feignent hypocritement certaines craintes, face à l’adversité, tout en pratiquant ouvertement le péché, seront totalement découragés, lors d’une épreuve réelle.

      Nous voyons dans ce texte, que le remplacement d'un dirigeant prudent et pacifique, par un autre, impétueux et ambitieux, affecte la qualité de vie de bon nombre de personnes.

      Ceux qui craignent le Seigneur et qui marchent dans Ses voies, sont les seuls à pouvoir prétendre au bonheur et à l’équilibre !
